It was time to leave the peace and tranquility of The Saint Meinrad Archabbey. We gifted ourselves with a no-rush drive home. The plan was to meander the back roads searching for local-fare lunch: authentic German. More Googling. What we found was that most German restaurants in the area were closed on Sundays.
Remember the “stay positive and something better will come along” trick? Stay tuned!
Knowing that lunch may not happen soon, we pulled into a grocery store in Ferdinand, IN for bottled water and a protein bar. No room for hangry on a day like this. BF stopped a couple in the parking lot; “Where’s the best place to eat lunch around here?”
They looked at each other. “On Sunday?” We seemed to have stumped them. He pointed to a Mexican restaurant a parking lot away. “That place is pretty good.” She agreed.
“Any German restaurants?”
They shook their heads. “Not on Sunday.” Wanting to be helpful he continued, “The next little town has some fast food places.”
We thanked them and walked into the grocery.
We stood in the snack aisle checking the sugar content on the protein bars when the man from the parking lot approached us. “Excuse me, but I thought of something. The Catholic church on the hill is having their annual summer picnic today. They serve fried chicken dinner in the elementary school. It’s really good.”
We smiled at each other and put the protein bars back on the shelf.
Maneuvering up the crowded hill searching for a parking space, we saw the sign, “Car Show Today.” BF said, “Well, will you look at that?! This is a perfect day.”
Do you see that cupcake? It was in the GLUTEN FREE section of the home-baked desserts. Yes! We were in the right place. And with the welcome we received, you’d have thought we were charter members.
BF in his element.
And look who we met:
Warm chicken dinner served with even warmer hospitality, a car show, and the coolest Pope . . . Priceless!
I love when serendipity happens. You made me smile this morning!
