Do you have a young child? A young grandchild? A niece or nephew? What would you be willing to do to remove them from a violent, unsafe situation? Let’s not even worry about hope for their future, their education, or living a successful life; let’s focus upon their immediate, physical safety. How far would you go to protect him or her?
I can tell you I’d do anything to protect my grandbaby Adi. I’d cross a border and worry about the legalities after I’d removed her from harm’s way. I’d allow anyone who wanted, to label me a criminal. Yes! I’d break any law to protect her.
My heart hurts over the plight of the families at my country’s border. I’m overwhelmed. Where do we begin? Do we begin by taking responsibility for selling guns made in America to perpetrators of violent crime in Mexico? Do we take a look at our homeland drug crisis that funds the drug cartels in Mexico? Do we adopt an elaborate plan that has the whole world working together toward the highest good for everyone—not just Americans? Do we remind our fellow humans that God’s creations speak more than one language and have more than one color of skin? Do we depend upon Washington to do the right thing? Yeah. It’s hopeless.
All I know to do, after nudging my legislators with calls and emails, donating to Together Rising, and sending love and light to my fellow humans who are involved in this debacle, is to turn to people I know and trust like Marianne Williamson (@mariannewilliamson). Her post on Instagram yesterday reminded me of my personal responsibility. Today, she reminds me to stay in my upset and use the emotion to foster change. She tells me it will cause a reconfiguration in my soul. Well, I’m definitely upset and sad and mortified and scared and I’m willing to stay there. And I invite reconfiguration into my soul. And I invite you to join me. We just have to start somewhere. We must. What if?
