A string of words . . .
As a writer, I’m always in search of the non-cliche’-fun-to-use, set of ordinary words that when strung together, create an image that just “nails it.”
I first heard the phrase “A string of wieners,” at the 90th birthday party of my first husband’s Uncle Jay. His wife, Aunt Marie, was chatting about new curtains for the living room. He said, “Well, you know what that’s going to be don’t ya?”
We didn’t.
“A big ‘ole string of wieners. You know . . . one thing leads to another. New curtains cause the paint to appear faded and new paint makes the carpet look warn. It’s just a string of wieners–one thing after another. And then you just spent $5,000 on new curtains.”
I fell in love with, and adopted this phrase as my own, and have used it throughout my life. Each time I embark on a home-updating project, I openly admit right from the start, “This will likely turn out to be a string of wieners.” And usually it does.
I’m so glad you embraced this phrase and shared it with us growing up – I use it frequently!
