It’s Just Soap–But Is It?
April 8, 2023

Last week, I wrote that there are many ways to show love.

When I returned to our rental in Arizona, after dropping BF in San Diego for his epic bicycle adventure, I found a sweet message written in bar soap on the mirror above my sink in the bathroom.

It’s the last thing I see when I crawl into bed and the first thing I see in the morning. It has become a reminder, a connection.

From a five-year-old perspective

The first time Adi was over after BF left, she saw the script and said, “Oh no! Someone has written on the wall.”

I assured her it was okay.

With great authority and insistence, she retorted, “The owners of this house are not going to like that.”

I explained Papa had written it before he left as a love note, and that it was written in soap which would wash off easily with window cleaner. She didn’t seem convinced.

A few days later, I popped into “her” bathroom, and something caught my eye, a few marks on the bathroom mirror. I stopped to check it out, quickly realizing the marks were test marks, exactly the width of the bar of soap I keep in “her” tub.

The Gift

I cannot tell you what a gift that little message has been to me. A touchstone of sorts. A simple gesture that serves to remind that someone crazy enough to ride his bicycle from San Diego to St. Augustine, loves me. Now, how cool is that? Pretty dang cool!

And no, it isn’t just soap.

The Universe is guiding me on an incredible adventure: my Plan B. I write here to share bits of my Odyssey, hopefully to inspire, encourage, or extend the virtual hand of friendship.

When I quit teaching in 2014, I could never have imagined the growth I would experience through travel, writing, reading, therapy, and introspection.

I believe human connection and compassion will go a long way toward our healing, and the best way to connect and feel compassion for one another is through the sharing of our stories.

Thank you for joining me here. I appreciate you and may we grow together.
